Shepard Fairey was the first guest on Jonesy's Jukebox broadcasting from the Ford Amphitheatre, where the L.A. screening of TFIU took place. Shepard was on Steve's show to promote his FENDER OBEY STRUMMER guitar. As I understand it, there's one model which includes several stickers and stencils for the owner to customize. Shepard brought 2 examples of the guitar to display. It's supposed to be released this month. I was informed that there will also be a faithful reproduction of Joe's Tele by Fender Custom Shop available, so this one will be different from the OBEY version.

Here are pics I took relating to the FENDER OBEY guitar:

Example 1

Example 2

Customization kit (including stickers)

Specs sheet

Stickers again

Shepard discussing his project

Shepard Fairey

Stickers yet again

Steve holding example 2

Me either.  I posted my thoughts on my site.  I was especially unhappy when I thought this would be the one and only Joe Strummer Tribute Tele coming out of Fender.  I would rather see Damien Hirst do a tribute.  Not that I have anything against Shepard Fairey, I just think Fender is capitalizing on an existing relationship that it has with this particular artist.

I consider the Shepard Fairey one to be a piece of artwork/an investment, not to be played, with all the stickers remaining intact on the sheet. However, Fender's straight-up repro should be played.

It will undoubtedly be treated as such, and priced accordingly.  That's another reason why I have really mixed feelings about it.  "Turning rebellion into money..."

At least it's art...sure, it's still a commodity, but I guess I view it differently...I can see it displayed in a gallery.

Hah, but now that Damien is in a whole new league imagine what his sticker art would add to the overall price tag!

Controversial British artist Damien Hirst has grabbed headlines once again, this time as one of his trademark medicine cabinets has broken the auction sales record for a living artist.

An anonymous bidder has purchased Hirst's contemporary art piece Lullaby Spring for £9.65 million (about $20.6 million Cdn) at a Sotheby's auction in London on Thursday night.

Here's the whole article if you're interested:

I agree that this is more an art piece and less a tribute than the proposed CS tribute (which will likely be $10k if the Andy Summer tribute is any indication); but, if it has great pickups and feels great, I'm all for it.  Of course, I'm pretty good at banging up instruments so it might be overkill.

I agree too.  But, as a player, I could not spend the money on something just to hang it on the wall.  If Fender had a Custom Shop Joe Strummer tribute Tele a year ago that looked like mine, I probably would have bought one (although not for the huge amount of money the Andy Summers Tele is commanding).  You can buy an Obey Fender Squier Telecaster for $300.  So..........

I wouldn't hang it on the wall. I'd put it away since I see it as an investment. The Obey Fender Squier Tele doesn't have the Joe/Clash panache, though. The Obey one is more of a cross-collectible, as it appeals to both Obey/Shepard collectors and Joe/Clash fans.

just to make sure--I meant bang (as in beat up), not hang (as in hang on a wall).  Either way, I'm adding this one to the list of ones I need to play before buying.

Damn, that's less than I paid for mine, but less than an American standard...I wonder where they're built...at that price point my guess is Fender Japan.

The thing that bugs me the most about it, is that it's not accurate to either of Joe's black teles.  They should have picked either the "Ignore Alien Orders" tele OR the "CONTROL" tele...

Actually, that was an early '60s Stratocaster, or a relic version of one.

Really? It did look pretty worn, even on the back.

MIM.  Otherwise known as "Made in Mexico."

New photos on the Sam Ash site show the guitar without any stickers or the "Obey touch."  Just a Mexican Tele with a worn finish.  The first 2500 buyers get the sticker package so they can apply the DIY ethic and customize it themselves.

At this point, I'm not sure what to think.  Kudos to Fender for making the effort and keeping the guitar affordable.  However, the regular Fender MIM Classic series guitars, which is what this is, go for $670 new at Sam Ash, including shippping.  Street price for a used version is about $300.  So............

complete crap.  Kids, save your $800 and buy an American Standard or a Highway 1 telecaster.

PS. or buy a standard MIM tele and use the $200 you saved to put in some decent pickups

Heh...isn't this ironic timing? I have 2300 dollars saved up to go out and purchase a tele of my own. I saw one for 1400...by the time you add in amp, tax...stuff you know...better to be on the safe side. But then this comes along...I went on Fender's website about an hour ago to show my dad where all the costume shoppes are...luckily Edmonton has one of the only two in Canada. But...yeah...I saw Joe's face, clicked the link and went crazy reading all that stuff. Ahhh! Only the first 1500 with stickers? And there is no pricing...or official date. Damn. But yeah, I did look on that other site. 899 bucks! Ahh...that's 500 less. The thing is if it's squire...Then it's not gonna be as good quality. There's a lot to consider. I just hope I'll have longer than Monday...that's when we planned to go out and get one. But it is exciting news anyway.

Well look at that, Fender does indeed have the specs up:

http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0133900
http://www.fender.com/joestrummer/

$899 for a MIM tele is pretty steep though, especially considering the other Artist model made in Mexico, the Muddy Waters tele, sells for $650.  Poly finish?  Blech!

Nothing on the Custom Shop version....

Though it does come with a case.....see if I hadn't just spent $950 on my own, I might buy one of these and put my own stickers on it....I would pay good money for the "customization kit" though, to make a "CONTROL" tele...and the "Revolution Rock" neck plate, that's a nice touch.

I say bah to the naysayers out there. I think Joe would have gotten a kick out of this. Lets put it this way. It would be one thing if it were a custom shop model for 4000 bones that looked exactly like Joe's. I'd be embarrassed to take a guitar like that out in public. This is different. Without the stickers and stencils it's just a tele with the finish of a car that's been through one too many acid rains. Thats too cool for words. And I love that they're inviting people to be DIY and abuse the motherfucker! Plus, you know those stencils and stickers will be scanned and posted on the internet faster than you can say bob's your uncle.

This will be my next guitar.

I gotta say, I have mixed feelings. But I'm going to be honest with you and tell you that I already have mine paid for. Because:

I want to know what it feels, sounds, and looks like in person. If the guitar is worth my keeping, then I certainly will. It's definitely not a very accurate reproduction, in my opinion, but it does still look pretty fuckin' neat. Now, mind you, though, I like relic stuff. And the added DIY customization kit is really cool. (I can only hope I get one with my order)

I think it'd be easier to say that the Fender Custom Shop version would be an example of turning rebellion in to money. Think about it, on one hand we have OBEY (Shephard Fairey), an artist who has loved the Clash, and who's very career was inspired by the Clash's style. He makes a copy of Joe Strummer's guitar, gets it approved by Mrs. Mellor, and even promotes the very Strummer ideal of customization to the relatively cheap guitar for an Artist Series.

On the other hand, we have Fender- a huge guitar-churning corporation- who is going to spill out a Strummer dead-on replica that would burn to even touch after spending upwards of $10 grand on it.

Now, maybe I won't be so wary of the CS version if it's surprisingly cheap. But something tells me, that it will end up being cheaper to go the way that TributeTele went in the end, and just do it your fuckin' self!

And by the way, kudos on that guitar man, it's beautiful. I've talked to David Rowe, and I think we may be working on a project pretty soon as well. Great guy!

Thanks for the kind remarks.

I know for sure that my DIY tribute was cheaper than going the "Every scratch is in its place" Fender CS route, which still doesn't exist, even though it was more expensive than the Fender/Fairey version.  I went a little crazy sourcing original 60s and 70s parts for my guitar, and THAT was expensive, but Billy Rowe would have built me the exact guitar with all new parts for about the same price as a new Les Paul Standard.

Billy was amazing.  His attention to detail and enthusiasm for the project was unbelievable (and also deeply apppreciated).  We both wanted this to be as exact as possible, and I plan to work with him again and again.  And he would do the same for anybody.  I'm not special; I just had a project that captured his enthusiasm.  I love the result, and I am glad others appreciate it too.
