TOPPER PLAYED WITH MICK LAST NIGHT
Current mood: ecstatic

The first night of Carbon Silicon's six-week residency at the  Inn On The Green Ladbrooke Grove promised surprises.

I live in Worcester and Friday nights are a bit of a problem getting to London.  Traffic and work commitments make it difficult.(Its a 3 hour normal run) But as luck would have it my hubby had an early morning meeting in London so if i got up early and walked around for a few hours waiting for him....we could do it.  Ok so it poured with rain all day i was tired and soaked to the skin but after a quick dry out made it at  to the venue at 6pm.Mick was standing on the balcony overlooking the road when we arrived having a fag....now at last i can see the benefits of being a fellow smoker...lol

The venue was starting to fill up .We met up with some old friends so had a good chin wag.Watched Mick sign the hugest pile of records and photo's some guy asked him to sign ....Mick  is so good humoured and sat and chatted while he did it.

They started taking the door money about 7ish .The bands play in the club room so as soon as you  pay your tenner get stamped you can go in and out of it as you wish. There were quite a few bemused locals who wondered what the hell was going on.

First band on  was British Voodoo who happen to be Micks cousin Martin's son band  . Next up was Adam Masterson i only saw a little of his set  he was doing some Frank Sinatra songs pretty good but the queue at the bar was a bit of a battleground and ....ok i do like to chat!!! Apparently Topper was here so the rumour was true .

A lot of the Clash crew were in the house .Johnny Green had come along with Topper. Don Letts, Scratcy Myers, Robin Banks,Glen matlock and various assorted BAD members. Probably a few more i didn't know or recognise but it was good to see the support of old mates for Mick and Topps.

Just before Carbon Silicon set was the fabulous Rotten Hill Gang. They were a mix of the Cracked Actors (one of my favourite bands) and the dub pistols.Well worth seeing .Great to see Mick dancing to You gotta pick a pocket or two(Oliver!!!) he seemed to be having a great time.

Playing between sets was Gary Crowley, providing some great dub, reggae, hip-hop, punk and various mash-ups.

When Carbon/Silicon took to the stage, the tiny venue was full to bursting the venue certainly let in more than the 150 it said on the website info ..

Explaining the intentions for the residency, Tony told the crowd: "We'll be playing some old songs, some new songs, some you know, some you don't and some WE don't!"

Mick started with  reading from a book of Second World War poetry .... his poetry corner! slot !!!first to stunned silence, then they jammed  into  Really the blues. The set i included 'Magic Suitcase', 'War On Culture', 'The News', 'Really The Blues'  'What The Fuck', 'I Loved You' and 'The Gangs Of England'.  Tony sang a  song that i didn't know  maybe someone can help me out on this one? The main set concluded with a storming 'Why Do Men Fight? Obviously we were all shouting for more and the band reappeared.

Now came the point were were anticipating all night...was it going to happen??

Mick introduced Topper  to the stage to a crowd that was going absolutely mental  he  explained  to those who didn't know that they hadn't played together for 25 years. With a crack of the snare, the unmistakable intro riff to 'Train In Vain' charged into action. The crowd surged forward, camera flashes were going off everywhere .Topper looked fantastic and played brilliantly the human drumming machine was back and it truly was a wonderful feeling to see him back up there having a great time  The smile on Mick's face said it all  he was deliriously happy, and admitted almost immediately when the song finished that it was "a dream come true".  'Should I Stay Or Should I Go'.followed. At its climax, Topper stood  up to a thunderous applause  and looked genuinely touched.

So  am i glad i made the effort to go to this  the historic occasion .......too right i am what a fantastic night. It's just a shame that this was  a one off ..maybe Topper will get the urge back to get out there again.....really really hope he does.

Met Topps after and he signed my Proud gallery post card of him i just happened to have in my bag also gave him a great big hug and got a kiss off him..never seen so many jealous men....ha ha(only because they wanted to hug and kiss him!!!!!!!)

Mick's GOT to play with Paul soon --- that will just make the circle complete:
Mick playing with Joe onstage
Mick playing with Tops onstage
...

Mick did play with Paul -- at Kate Moss's a couple of years ago.  It was the gateway to Paul's return to bass playing.

Ohhhhh.... Thanks.
Then this was even more perfect --- Mick must just be completely chuffed* to have played with all of his old bandmates now!

Yup, I went! It was AMAZING!!! Topper came out for the encore and they did Train in Vain followed by Should I Stay. I took a video of most of Train in Vain (my camera was fucking up on me for the first 20 seconds or so of it). There was only 1 row of people in front of me (by the time the encore came around, anyway).

Can't wait till next week! Maybe Paul'll show...?

Brilliant...are you going to upload your video to YouTube?

I'll see if I can when I get back to the US. I need to get back to my own computer first. I'll definitely upload some pix, and if the video's alright I'll try to upload that, too. Unfortunately, the earliest that might happen is January 26th (more likely the 27th).

Don was filming c/s the whole time so guess he will have some excellent footage.A friend just told me she saw two of the Slits there too.I didn't see them but it honestly wasn't that kind of gig they were all there to support Topps and it wasn't some celeb kind of do at all

Brilliant. Topper came down with Johnny Green, couldn't sit still all night, a bit like "a boxer before a match," in Mick's words. Soon as Topper started to play, Mick said, it sounded like The Clash to him (without Joe obviously). The whole thing was unrehearsed, as Topper wanted. He looked robust and played like it. And Dominic Greensmith could not have been more pleased.

Looking at the videos, what I think is terrific is that, unrehearsed, Topper remembered all of the cues to both songs, especially in Train In Vain, when Mick stretched the ending to the song. Topper went into the 80's live version part, where everything goes quiet (did you stand by me...), with the high hat and bass drum.

Great to see. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks for posting the 2 shows on You Tube and for the pictures...Looks like a good time was had by all...

Great to see Topper on the drums and fantastic to see him
behind Mick...Unrehearsed but it sounded like Topper and Mick
picked up where they left off...

It was fantastic to see both of them after all these years, but I can imagine what Mick and Topper must have felt....

The past 25 years and all those great Clash shows...the good,
the bad, all the tours coming in all at once at that one moment...

Topper looks great and healthy and Mick is definitely aging gracefully as well.....

What a great start for a new year!!!!!

PS...I hate to add this but What would Joe do (or said)? Seeing the video made my mind place Joe and Paul right on that stage as well.

PPS.  With Mick sing both Train... and Should I as encores, does this mean that he will be adding some Clash songs to C/S shows?

i think he did the clash songs that night cos of topper and it such.
i like the fact that he would rather stick to c/s songs and not play clash songs in the sets. not that it wouldn't be nice to hear him play clash songs, but it's carbon silicon, not the clash.

i may be the only one that thinks this tho. oh well.

oh and budgie you lucky lucky girl!!! muhwah!

You may not be the only one, but I disagree.

I think it's a little absurd to completely ignore your past. So a Clash or BAD tune now and then seems appropriate to me.

i don't think he should completely ignore his past either. it's not what i said.
but i mean at least the one i went to, people were yelling out clash songs to play, and i just got the feeling of like some people came expecting/wanting to hear clash songs and such...and a guy yelled out' lost in the supermarket' and mick just casually said into the mike 'as much as i try to stay away, they just try to reel me back in.'...i've only been to one show tho, so i don't know how it's been at the others.

again tho, im not denying it wouldn't be great to hear clash/bad songs (tho im not much of a bad fan), but i like the fact that he likes to keep it current.

one thing i can't stand bout the internet, is that it can be hard to express what i want to say. i prefer face to face.

Aye, I'm afraid there will always be the ones yelling out for this tune or that -  it sorta comes with the turf of being a legend. There's a balance to be had  - just don't ask me what that balance might be.

I'm sure he wants to emphasize the now of what he's doing, and I imagine Mick and C/S will sort all that out appropriately.

actually i was really impressed at the ny show no one yelled out for clash songs...and as amazing as it would have been the show was still great, they definitely created this amazing vibe in the whole place and it just seemed like everyone was ridiculously happy the whole time...

i think whatever they want to do is fine by me, i'll be at the show either way
