the Royal Mail are bringing out a 1st class stamp with London Calling album cover on it

Postal mail just got a lot more rock n’ roll.

Classic album covers from The Clash, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Coldplay are going to be featured on British postage materials. With a nod to the art and importance of album artwork, The Royal Mail just revealed a new series of first-class postage stamps that will arrive Jan. 7th; the set of 10 stamps are a tribute to some of the U.K.’s most famous album covers.

Check out the list of iconic covers that will be featured in the new stamp collection…

The set of 10 stamps include:

  • The Clash’s London Calling

  • David Bowies’ Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

  • New Order’s Power Corruption and Lies and IV are joined by

  • Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell

  • Coldplay’s A Rush of Blood to the Head  WOT THE F*CK?

  • Primal Scream’s Screamadelica

  • Blur’s Parklife

  • Rolling Stones’ Let it Bleed

  • Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells

  • Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV

In the digital age, album artwork has been mostly an afterthought; quite the opposite when the album cover’s aesthetic power played perfectly with the long reign of vinyl. There are still good album covers, but it’s not the same. Holding a CD copy of London Calling versus a vinyl copy of London Calling is an easy choice.

And in our download culture no one’s holding much of anything, so the Stones’ Let it Bleed cover is more likely to be viewed in a Google Images search.

Got to hand it to The Royal Mail, they certainly chose an eclectic list. But that’s a tribute to both the country’s wonderful legacy of music and the many talented designers whose artwork is forever linked with music history

Too bad they're not doing this in the US -- I'd totally buy some LC and Ziggy Stardust...

the fact that coldplay is on there makes it a bit of a joke. especially since they've seemed to neglect the biggest band in britain in oasis.

cool concept, its just a shame that they enlist the help of fuckwits to orchestrate it.

Magnus is that  pic you checking your mail?

Looking at that list again, and I'm too lazy/busy (can you be busy and lazy at the same time?) to look these up so I'll just ask:

Musical value aside, are the album covers for Screamadelica and Rush of Blood to the Head so memorable/fantastic that they should be on this list?  Or is it really just cuz those bands were really famous?

Most of those albums are considered icnonic (well, many of them anyway).  But I simply don't know how Coldplay and Primal Scream are viewed on this list compared to everyone else.  Iconic?  Brilliant artwork?  Just sold a lot?

Primal Scream does seem a bit of an odd choice

ive got screamadelica though and its quite good - although its probably far better if your off your tits on smack whilst listening

Coldplay on the other hand are one of the w*nkest 'bands' in history and i hope the lead singers penis falls off in a freak yachting accident

what a TOSSER

Maybe I should not be commenting on this but London Calling and Screamadelica are the only ones of these I would bother listen to. New Order would also be ok. And I dont need to be smacked out to enjoy Screamadelica, i think it is a brilliant album weather out of your head or not. In fact I would say Screamadelica is probably up there as one of my all time favourite albums.
Of course Coldplay is crap and for me it is very strange to choose Division Bell. Why not Wish you were here or some other. But maybe the artwork is fine though the songs are utter crap.
